Qaitbay citadel

Qaitbay citadel

Standing proudly at the edge of the Mediterranean Sea in Alexandria, the Citadel of Qaitbay is a majestic reminder of Egypt’s medieval strength and seafaring past. Built in 1477 AD by Sultan Al-Ashraf Qaitbay, this fortress was designed to protect the city from threats posed by the Ottoman Empire and other invaders arriving by sea.

But Qaitbay’s significance goes even deeper. It was constructed on the very spot where the legendary Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, once stood. After the lighthouse was badly damaged by earthquakes, Qaitbay reused its stones to build a new guardian over the harbor.

Architecture and Features

The citadel is a fine example of Mamluk military architecture, blending practical design with aesthetic beauty. Its thick stone walls, crenellated towers, and narrow corridors were built for defense, but they also offer stunning views of the sea.

Key Highlights:

  1. The Main Tower: A square-shaped, three-story structure that once housed soldiers, weapons, and supplies. Climb to the upper levels for panoramic views over the harbor and the city skyline.
  2. Walls and Courtyards: Walk through large open courtyards surrounded by defensive walls and arched passageways.
  3. Museum Rooms: Some halls have been converted into small displays, with maritime artifacts, cannons, and historical information about the site.
  4. Lighthouse Ruins: Though nothing remains above ground of the original Lighthouse, you're literally standing on its ruins, a powerful connection to one of the world’s greatest ancient structures.

Strategic and Cultural Role

Qaitbay Citadel played a key defensive role for centuries, facing battles and bombardments from various forces including the Ottomans, Napoleon’s fleet, and later, British forces. It remained in use in various forms until the 19th century.

Today, it serves more as a cultural symbol than a military one, a beloved landmark for locals and a top attraction for visitors to Alexandria.
