The Unfinished Obelisk

The Unfinished Obelisk

Located in Aswan’s Northern Quarry, the Unfinished Obelisk offers a rare and fascinating glimpse into the ancient Egyptian world of stone working. Commissioned during the reign of Queen Hatshepsut in the 15th century BCE, this massive monument was intended to be the largest obelisk ever carved from a single piece of granite.

Its creation was abruptly halted when large cracks appeared in the stone. Abandoned in place, the obelisk remained in the quarry, where it still lies today, partially detached from the bedrock. It was never erected, but its unfinished state provides unmatched insight into ancient engineering techniques.

Size and Significance

If completed, the obelisk would have stood over 42 meters tall and weighed an estimated 1,200 tons, making it the heaviest known piece of stone ever attempted by the ancient Egyptians.

Unlike most other monuments that have been moved or rebuilt, the Unfinished Obelisk remains exactly where ancient workers left it, giving archaeologists and visitors a direct look at the tools and methods used over 3,000 years ago.

What to See at the Site

Visitors walking through the quarry can see chisel marks, tool grooves, and fissures where cracks appeared, causing the project to be abandoned. Informational signs help explain the stages of obelisk construction, from initial carving to polishing and detachment.

There is also a small museum on site that displays ancient tools and explains how the obelisks were quarried and transported to temples across Egypt.
