Saint Catherine Mountain

Saint Catherine Mountain

Saint Catherine Mountain, located in the heart of the Sinai Peninsula, is Egypt’s highest mountain at 2,629 meters (8,625 feet) above sea level. It’s named after Saint Catherine of Alexandria, whose relics are believed to have been miraculously transported here by angels, according to Christian tradition.

The mountain holds deep religious, cultural, and natural significance. It’s close to Mount Sinai and part of a sacred landscape revered in Christian, Islamic, and Jewish traditions. For hikers, pilgrims, and nature lovers, it offers both a spiritual and physical journey unlike any other in Egypt.

The Hike to the Summit

  • Climbing Saint Catherine Mountain is more demanding than Mount Sinai but also more peaceful and less crowded. The hike usually starts from Saint Catherine town, with local Bedouin guides leading the way. The trail winds through narrow valleys, rocky paths, and dramatic granite formations.
  • Climb Duration: 4 to 6 hours depending on fitness and pace
  • Difficulty: Moderate to challenging
  • Best Time to Climb: Early morning or pre-dawn to catch the stunning sunrise from the summit
  • At the top, you’re rewarded with incredible panoramic views over the Sinai mountains and, on clear days, even a glimpse of the Red Sea.

Natural Beauty and Solitude

What makes this mountain special is its serenity. Unlike the busier Mount Sinai, Saint Catherine offers quiet trails, fresh mountain air, and an untouched natural environment. In winter, the summit may be dusted with snow, adding to its mystical feel.

The area is also rich in rare plant life and home to ibex, rock hyraxes, and migratory birds. This makes it a destination not just for spiritual seekers but also for trekkers and ecotourists.

Saint Catherine Town and Monastery

At the base of the mountain lies Saint Catherine’s Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in the 6th century, it is one of the oldest active Christian monasteries in the world. A visit to the mountain is often combined with a tour of the monastery and the nearby Mount Sinai.
